In the 3rd year of the Bunroku Era (1594) of the Azuchi-Momoyama Period, Kungyokudo was founded as a medicine business in and around the present Honganji Temple. The founder, Riemon Negino, was interested in incense wood from a young age and devoted himself to the identification of incense wood and the study of incense materials, laying the foundation for Kungyokudo to become an incense dealer. In order to appreciate the strong fragrance of incense, the owner of Shiinairu Kodo welcomed him to come and practice, and in later years it was revived as an academy and has been passed down to this day. In addition, since then, they have been sending incense to major temples and monasteries of various sects, including the Hongoji Temple of Hongoji. For more than 420 years since its establishment, they have continued to create the fragrances of that era. While preserving the tradition of Japan’s oldest incense center, they will continue to propose scents that are easily integrated into modern life.
